Earlier this week, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden tweeted that the White House has been fully decorated for Christmas.
“Inspired by the acts of kindness and experiences that lifted our spirits this year, decorated rooms in the White House reflect the Gifts from the Heart that unite us all: faith, family, friendship, the arts, learning, nature, gratitude, service, community, peace, and unity,” the First Lady’s tweet reads.
If you’re familiar with the history of White House Christmas decorations, you’ll notice that this year’s adornments are refreshingly ordinary compared to the last few years.
In case you need a reminder, in 2017, former First Lady Melania Trump’s choice of white Christmas trees caused an outpour of criticism and memes.
People made fun of the decor, and some even drew comparisons to The Handmaid’s Tale and other horror classics.
And it turns out that Melania had complained about the decorations earlier that year. In tapes released by CNN, Melania had been secretly recorded in the summer of 2018 saying, “I’m working … my a** off on the Christmas stuff, that you know, who gives a f*** about the Christmas stuff and decorations? But I need to do it, right?”
So, after quite a few rocky Christmas situations at the White House, it makes sense that people were shocked at how pleasant and non-dystopian this year’s decorations are.
It seemed like everyone was in agreement…
…and they were able to let out sighs of relief.
