“I walked away thinking, ‘Oh, he’s in the new Spider-Man.’”
Everyone knows Andrew Garfield pulled off his big surprise moment in Spider-Man: No Way Home — but he also recently starred in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical adaptation (and directorial debut!) Tick, Tick…Boom!.
And even though Garfield was successfully bluffing his way through hiding his big news to the rest of the world, LMM had a feeling he wasn’t being honest.
In an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, Miranda said that he first had his suspicions after flat-out asking Garfield on the set of Tick, Tick…Boom!.
“The day it leaked he might be involved, he was on my set,” Miranda recalled. “We were still filming.”
“And, between shots, I kind of quietly went over to him and was like, ‘Andrew, are you…in the new Spider-Man?’ His exact reaction was, ‘What?! Shut up! Shut up! Hahaha! Shut up!’”
“And I walked away thinking, ‘Oh, he’s in the new Spider-Man.’”
And now we all know the truth — and since LMM guessed right early, he also got to watch Garfield get better at lying about the whole thing. “[W]hen I saw him on your show, he was a total pro at denying it,” he told Fallon. “But…he had to get there.”
